Catching Up

Today is Saturday, one day before our one year wedding anniversary.  Jeff and I are at Joe's...a little coffee dive in East Atlanta Village.  It's fairly quiet in here today.  Jeff is working on some writing and i'm finally catching up on this blog of mine.  the DINKS again post was starting to get on my nerves because it's been up for three months now.  It's raining outside, which i'm so glad about.  for the garden, and because it gives me an excuse to stay in and get some updates done.

If the sun comes out again today, i'll go outside and take some pictures of the back yard as it looks now.  it was fun to look at some of the pictures I took early this spring/late winter because we hadn't done anything to the yard then and now it looks so much better!  we did a little makeshift landscaping with dug up rocks and loads of mulch.  we planted 9 thuja green giants along the back fence, we started a new bean bed along the side of the shed (there's also okra in this bed) and the compost is finally somewhat organized....can you organize compost?

I've got so much planted this year and can't wait for it to all start taking off.  Mainly at this point because i've got some little munchers that keep threatening to take down my tomatos and kale before it has a chance to get strong.  but, i don't want to use any pesticides.  and, i haven't gotten around to making this soap/cayenne pepper conconction that I've heard is effective.

Clare, i also heard about the whole plant tomatos on their side thing...i'm trying it now.  we'll see how that goes.  and, my peas are like candy too!  I didn't plant a ton so i'm sure none of them will ever make it into the house for a meal, they'll just make for a great little snack while i weed.

Mom, i planted the blue sage by the garden.  am still trying to decide where to put the blackeyedsusans...or were they cone flowers? can't remember.

I'll take pictures of all this stuff and post when the sun comes out.

Now i'm going to read this book:

and make faces at this man:

this outfit

belonged to my mom when she was probably my age.  it ended up being the perfect attired for jeff when he DJ'd for youth group dance a couple months ago.  hot stuff huh?  oh, also, he's wearing my hemp necklace from highschool-heh.

Remember that time it snowed so much?

it was a sunday and it just snowed and snowed.  abe and lita loved and went a little bit bonkers in the yard.  i learned a few years ago that abe gets frisky in the snow (we were in north carolina and it snowed over christmas and abe played and played)

Dogs, Food, Massage and Food

These two like to keep me company when I'm cooking.

I was making spring rolls.  The first time i made spring rolls, the recipe said to soak the spring roll wrappers for 30 seconds and then pat dry.  well.  that did not work.  i ended up with a big ball of wet, drippy, doughy mush by the end.  and out of a package of 40 spring roll wrappers, i salvaged about 6.  this time, i just let them thaw out, spritzed them with a little water from the sink sprayer and rolled away.  much much more successful.  these are old pictures, from during Lent.  when jeff is fasting, i sort of halfway do it and try to cook vegan meals so it gives me a reason to try new recipes that i wouldn't normally try...like spring rolls.

Donna gave Jeff a massage one night.  she's so good at her profession.

This was another lenten meal.  I think it was thai red curry with tofu.  can't remember exactly...it was a while ago.  this and the recipe for spring rolls (I think) both came out of the google cookbook that jeff brought home for me.  the chef at the google home office cooks healthy, organic, blah blah meals for the staff everyday b/c they have a theory that if the staff eats right, etc. they will be more productive, happy employees.  hrmph.  imagine that?  can i please work for a company that knows things like this and actually does something about it?

DINKS again...

well, jeff and I are now "double income no kids" for the second time in our short but o so sweet married life so far. i've just been offered and accepted a position with the Atlanta Women's Foundation as the executive assistant/board liaison to the CEO. I'm so excited! I'll start on march 2nd and will the complete my five month sabbatical from working. the break has been SO GOOD and needed and i'm really thankful for it. Thankful to my hardworking and understanding husband who has been nothing but grateful to me for what i've done around the house while he's at work. It has been nice and i'll miss not having two hours if i want it to cook dinner with new and somewhat complicated and time consuming recipes, working in the yard all day if i want to, having the house all clean and straightened, being home with the dogs who follow me around from room to room, hanging out with my friends who are moms during the day, and being with my sister who lives with us and is home during the day sometimes, etc. etc. But, it's so worth it for our future planning AND i got a job that i will really enjoy, learn from, and maybe even go somewhere with! i feel very blessed.

a tour of the gilbert street house.

This post is specifically for my cousin Krista who requested that I take pics of our house and post them since the likelyhood that she'll get to visit (seeing has how they live in Pennsylvania) is small. Sooo, here goes. The new bathroom and donna's room aren't featured b/c I already posted the bathroom and I just haven't taken pics of donna's yet.  Krista, sorry this is about 4 months late.  I think the adjustment to going back to work fulltime definitely took it's toll on my blogging frequency and motivation.

late night.

Jeff worked late last night at home and I fell asleep with Lita in the chair...but woke up when the flash of the camera started. glad Jeff capture this snuggly COZY moment though. I'm pretty sure i look like i'm really young in the sleepy picture. it looks like a pic that was taken when i was a senior in highschool or something.

New Bathroom!

I finally got around to giving this bathroom a little attention. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get in there, but after I did this past friday, I quite enjoyed it! Here are the before pictures. It was all white and sort of haphazard.

And here are the AFTER pictures! Thanks Sharon for my wonderful new shower curtain and fun little accents. I love them!

workday at miss bell's house.

this saturday, jeff and I went to athens to help josh and clare clean out miss bell's house. she is an elderly lady (in the hospital now for hypothermia) who lives alone in some pretty dire conditions. her house was in need of a major clean up and clean out so about 10 or so people showed up to help. here's some pictures i swiped from clare's blog. you can read the whole story at www.thegreengate.blogspot.com.

Clare made sandwiches and the best healthy rice crispy treats ever for us to eat before we started. notice the empty dump truck in the back.

getting started. we got rid of a lot of old broken stuff. included this table....

...and this old hospital bed.

we found lot of old pictures. and wondered who they were.

we found lots of roaches...and wished we hadn't.

we took a break.

we went back to work. check out clare tackling the bathroom. glad you finally put gloves on clare!

we laughed real hard.

we FILLED UP the dump truck. still can't believe all that stuff. (who's that big dork?)

and then we went back to the adams' place and ate delicious lasagna made by clare and brownies and ice cream and had tea and at around and talked and talked and rested and got all cozy by the fire.

and all the boys snuggled and wrestled on the floor. and the girls rolled their eyes and laughed at them.

the end.
